What is Diatomaceous Earth?

The term diatomaceous earth sounds like something almost out of a bleak science-fiction novel:  cold; brooding; almost intimidating.  However, when you plunge under the stuff's verbal surface, you will find that the substance is quite helpful in helping your garden grow.
